Another Original Six team will partake in the annual NHL Winter Classic this year as the New York Rangers will play the Philadelphia Flyers on Jan. 2 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
The NHL will hold a press conference next Monday afternoon to officially announce the event. The league will also announce that the two teams will be involved in an HBO 24/7 series, much like Pittsburgh and Washington last season.
This is the fifth straight year for the Winter Classic, and the fourth event to feature Eastern Conference teams. The only Winter Classic to feature Western Conference teams took place in Chicago in 2009 when the Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings in an Original Six rivalry matchup.
This will be the second time the Flyers will play in the Winter Classic. The team played the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park in Boston in 2010.
This year’s game will take place on Jan. 2 instead of New Year’s Day in order to avoid a conflict with a full schedule of Sunday football games.
