The New York Rangers released a statement today revealing that franchise goaltender Henrik Lundqvist will be sidelined for three weeks with what the team is calling vascular injury.
“Henrik Lundqvist suffered a vascular injury on Saturday. We have been conferring with leading medical experts to ensure the best possible care,” the team’s statement said. “Henrik will remain sidelined at least three weeks, until he is re-evaluated and we have completed the process of conferring with the medical experts.”
Lundqvist was hit in the throat by a rising shot during the second period of the team’s contest against the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 31. Although he received medical treatment on the ice after the play from Rangers medical staff, he stayed in net for the remainder of the game—which the Rangers ended up winning 4-1. However, he said after the game that he felt lightheaded and was experiencing headaches for the remainder of the game.
He did not dress Wednesday for the team’s 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins.
The 32-year-old netminder has 25 wins on the season, with a .922 save percentage and 2.25 goals against average. See below for video of the injury.
