The Florida Panthers have signed 20-year-old Aleksander Barkov to a six year contract extension worth $35.4 million.
Barkov tweeted about the deal this afternoon, saying that there will be a press conference at noon Tuesday to confirm the deal.
According to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, the extension is worth an average of $5.9 million per season.
The second overall draft pick of 2013, Barkov would have been a restricted free agent after this season. He has 12 goals and 30 points in 38 games this season, largely centering the top line of Jaromir Jagr and Jonathan Huberdeau. The line has outscored opponents 32-14 during 5-on-5 play. Barkov is also averaging 19.33 minutes of ice time per game and has a plus-12 rating on the season—both of which lead Panthers forwards.
