Patrick Roy Resigns

Surprising news out of Colorado today where we have learned that Patrick Roy has resigned from his positions with the Colorado Avalanche.

Roy was originally hired in May 2013, and coached three seasons with the Avalanche. His impact was felt immediately as he helped lead the Avalanche to a 52–22–8 record. He would go on to win the Jack Adam’s Award as coach of the year in 2014.

Since then, the story has been a bit different. His teams have failed to qualify for the playoffs, and there have been plenty of rumors about tensions circulating behind the scenes.

All signs point to various differences between Roy and Avalanche GM Joe Sakic as the reason for the coach’s departure. Terry Frei of the Denver Post indicated that Roy wanted the team to be aggressive during free agency, meanwhile, Sakic wanted to re-sign their core players.

Sakic didn’t have much to say regarding the sudden departure of his coach. Per the statement made available to NHL.com:

“Patrick informed me of his decision today,” he noted. “We appreciate all he has done for our organization and wish him the best of luck in the future.”

“We will begin the search for a new head coach immediately,” continued Sakic.
