If you are unfamiliar with the Belfast Giants, they are a professional team from Northern Ireland. They are members of the Elite Ice Hockey League in the United Kingdom. Despite them being a team in Europe, they feature 11 players who are from North America. They recently got in the Christmas spirit and shot a video lip-syncing “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey. I say this was well done by the players. I can only imagine the fun they had shooting it. It is also good marketing for the team because they have already received over 161,000 hits on Youtube in 10 days. This season, the Giants are enjoying a 21-4-2-1 record. They have a seven-point lead in the standings and have played three less games than two of the three teams tied for second place.
It gets casual hockey fans aware they play hockey in countries that aren’t traditional hockey powers. I first came across the video earlier tonight when I was watching the pregame show leading up to tonight’s Detroit-Vancouver game. John Keating of Fox Sports Detroit showed the video to several Red Wings to get their reaction. I wonder if this video will go viral like the Today Show and its staff singing “I’ve Got A Feeling” last month.
