Is Ilya Kovalchuk the best sniper in the game today?

He’s sure making a strong case for the crown with some impressive goals over in the Kontinental Hockey League, where he’s currently third in points and averaging 1.55 points per game.

Kovalchuk, who’s playing for SKA, tallied his latest gem against Vityaz in a 3-2 SKA victory. Kovalchuk begins the play coming up the left wing through the neutral zone but changes direction and starts moving toward the middle to give his teammate time to enter the zone on-side. He plays a poor pass off his skate and onto his stick before letting loose a wicked wrister that sails past the goalie’s shoulder and right into the back of the net. It’s tough to tell for sure from the video, but it certainly appears to be a straight shot with no deflection.

The goal ended up being the game winner with less than a minute remaining in the contest. Check out the video below to see the goal:
