A lot of attention has been focused on the Manti Te’o situation recently, despite the start of the 2013 NHL season. It is getting to be a bit too much though. But while hockey players know better than to make up fake girlfriends, those involved in the sport are not against poking fun at those who do.
A prime example comes from Saturdays home opener for the Dallas Stars. Typically hockey arenas are known for their kiss cam, or perhaps pointing out a celebrity in the crowd, but the Dallas Stars found an empty seat in the arena and put it on the big screen. The perfect label read as follows “Manti Te’o’s Girlfriend – Welcome to the game!”
The Stars twitter account even made reference to the joke as well:
Our cameras at AAC are sharp! They just caught Manti Te'o's girlfriend in section 125 on the jumbotron!
— Dallas Stars (@DallasStars) January 20, 2013
The Dallas Stars and newcomer Jaramir Jagr did show up to the game, however. Jagr and the Stars opened the season with a 4-3 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. Jagr picked up an impressive two goals and two assists in his debut. The nearly 41 year old Jagr is currently playing for his fifth NHL franchise, and will try to win help lead the Stars back to the postseason for the first time since 2007-08.
The Stars failed to show up against Minnesota on Sunday, however, being shut out 1-0. That performance also bared resemblance to Lennay Kekua, although it wasn’t quite as bad as the Red Wings vs. Blues on Saturday.
