While the preseason is definitely a serious time for players to get back in the swing of things, enhance their conditioning and readjust to the pace of NHL play, it’s also a time for players to get creative and try new things. Paul Ranger, defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs, certainly took advantage of his chance on the shootout tonight when the Leafs played the Buffalo Sabres when he kicked his stick to shoot the puck at the goalie. Ranger signed with the Maple Leafs in July after nearly three years away from the NHL. He formerly played for the Tampa Bay Lightning, but took a personal leave from the team in October 2009. The 29-year-old defenseman signed an AHL deal last season with the Toronto Marlies, playing in 51 games. He registered eight goals and 17 assists.

Toronto topped the Sabres 3-2 in the shootout.
