Ranger signed with the Maple Leafs in July after nearly three years away from the NHL. He formerly played for the Tampa Bay Lightning, but took a personal leave from the team in October 2009. The 29-year-old defenseman signed an AHL deal last season with the Toronto Marlies, playing in 51 games. He registered eight goals and 17 assists.

Toronto topped the Sabres 3-2 in the shootout.
