Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist has long been looked at as one of the next generation of stars for the Detroit Red Wings, and he’s making an immediate impact in his first full season in the Winged Wheel uniform.
Nyquist is tied for the team lead in goals at 14, and his 22 points are fourth best on the team. He’s emerged as an all-around skilled forward, capable of making plays and finishing them.
But perhaps his “heir apparent” status was further solidified when the team took on the Florida Panthers and Nyquist scored a spin-o-rama backhand goal against netminder Roberto Luongo that is eerily similar to one that teammate Pavel Datsyuk scored against Luongo 11 years prior.
The side-by-side video below of each goal shows the puck coming out of the corner to the respective player on the right side of the left circle where they each do a quick spin and rifle a backhand top shelf over Luongo’s shoulder.
Creepy.
